Howard scores 23 as MU tops Georgetown, 76-66
MILWAUKEE - Markus Howard had the most points for a Marquette player in a BIG EAST Conference debut since 2011 as the Golden Eagles held off Georgetown, 76-66, in their league opener on Wednesday evening at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.
Howard poured in a career-best 23 points to lead Marquette (10-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) to its first victory in a conference lid-lifter since a home win over Connecticut in 2013.
The last MU player to reach 23 points in their first BIG EAST game was Jae Crowder, who poured in 29 points as a junior college transfer against West Virginia on Jan. 1, 2011.
Senior Jajuan Johnson turned in another good all-around game for MU with 20 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals in 32 minutes.
Graduate student Rodney Pryor recorded 23 points to lead the Hoyas (8-5, 0-1 BIG EAST), who fought back from an early 11-0 deficit to tie the game late in the opening stanza.
Marquette returns to action on New Year's Day in a 3:30 p.m. Central time tip at Seton Hall.
